When Work and Play Come Together
Every now and then a special project comes along that allows the skilled engineers at Fehr Graham to utilize their talents to improve something that can be enjoyed beyond the work day.

In early 2012, Fehr Graham was retained by Sugar River Raceway to provide engineering design and construction staking services for improvements to the half-mile paved asphalt road course that was specifically built by the Fairman family for go-kart racing in 1959. The family still owns the track located along the Sugar River in Brodhead, Wisconsin.

A number of notable drivers started their racing careers at Sugar River Raceway including former NASCAR Champion Alan Kulwicki, Sports Car Champion Scott Pruett, and current NASCAR driver Danica Patrick.

The most exciting part of this project was that portions of the design were completed by Derek Thompson, a Civil Engineer at Fehr Graham and local dirt track racer who began his racing career at Sugar River, and Project Manager Rob Wilhelmi, who competes at the track on a weekly basis.

Significant improvements included a partial reconfiguration and new pavement at the lower end of the track to help keep the track surface above water when the adjacent Sugar River seasonally crests above flood stage. Keeping the track surface dry limits the number of event postponements or cancelations that can reduce business revenues.
