Cleaning up our community

Fehr Graham employees and members of their families got their hands dirty and cleaned up their community during the annual Boneyard Creek Community Day in Urbana on Saturday, Aug. 5.

Michelle Brown, the event’s marketing chair, Roland White, Mo Jawad and his daughter, Mona, and her friend, Jaffara Clark, along with the Johnson crew – Matt with his sons, Mark and Luke, and Grandpa Larry – all helped.

The Johnsons placed markers on storm drains that said, “No dumping. Drains to creek.” The signs remind the public not to dump into storm drains because the contents will go directly into the creek and possibly hurt the environment. The rest of the team found themselves knee deep in the creek.

“It was an honor to represent Fehr Graham and help the City of Urbana and Prairie Rivers Network to clean up the Boneyard Creek channel,” White said. “It was a team effort by all those involved. Volunteering to help clean up our urban drainage system has a real positive impact on the environment.”

Roland White takes a quick break to have his picture taken.

The team cleaned nearly one mile from North Mathews Avenue to West Griggs Street in Urbana. They found fence posts, for sale and rent signs, pipes, and more in the creek.

Next year’s event is slated for April 7 at Scott Park. The rain date is April 21.

Boneyard Creek Community Day restores natural corridors along the Boneyard Creek, Saline Branch and surrounding areas, creating more esthetic and functional habitat. The event also raises awareness of the importance and benefits of keeping our local waterways clean.
